Hacienda La Esmeralda::Finally got some!

Not a knock off lot. It was the Hacienda La Esmeralda Especial that brought the $130 (or whatever it was).

It smelled like Frootloops and didn’t really taste much different. Thank goodness that was my favorite cereal as a kid!

Was it good? Yes. Was it incredible? No. Was it worth $130 per pound at auction and $250 per pound at the store? No. I would pay $20…tops. Ethiopia Biloya is much better for a fraction of the cost.

  1. I think some of the non-auction geisha coffee that is floating around out there is equally impressive. I had some great Esmeralda from Stumptown that was $21 for a 12oz bag.

    My guess is that this is the last year that we’ll see such an astronomical price for that coffee as there should be many other Panama Geishas that were planted a few years back that will be making their debut. Maybe some of them will exceed the Esmeralda in beauty. Its possible the Esmeralda “brand” will still command a crazy price but that would be inappropriate considering that even that one farm will see a huge increase in Geisha production next season.

    I paid a pretty penny for a half pound bag of Intelli’s Rwanda Muyongwe (1st place in the Rwanda Golden Cup) and think the bang for buck ($27) made more sense.

    There has been a bottleneck on these superpremium lots on account of their rarity and the logistics of lot separation and transport. As things evolve in the next few years I think coffees of that caliber will become somewhat more common and prices will remain higher but not so astronomical.
