That is not Baseball…

July 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I really don’t even want to write about this. It isn’t like I am in the press and have a moral obligation to write about this topic.  Regardless of my feelings about it, but I will write about this trend, regardless.

Just like the advertising for professional horse racing with the folks chanting “Go, baby, go!” I, too, have my own little saying when a player hits a homer, throws a double play by the string of his jersey or better yet, throws a guy out at second base from the left corner by the foul pole (happened last week at Kinston).  I will stand up with everybody else, pump my fist and holler with a deep roar, “THAT’S BASEBALL!” I have no idea where I got that from, but I like it.

But Last week, my mother-in-law’s “boyfriend” and I went to the Kinston Indians (Cleveland Single A affiliate) game where they played the Fredrick Keys (Baltimore affiliate).  I have seen some things that make me want to stand up and pump my fist saying, “THAT AIN’T BASEBALL!” I saw a Venezuelan Third Basemen explode on an umpire because he felt that he had thrown a player out at second base. I have seen arguments over a call several times in my life, whether on TV or in person. But, this was out of control and off the chart of anything I had seen in person or otherwise. He just started pointing his finger at the ump’s chest, as if an ump has EVER changed his mind. He was right up in that ump’s face. The ump promptly kicked him out, but it took the manager of the Keys, Richie Hebner, way too long to react and get that kid out of the ump’s face. For crying out loud another Keys player had to get in between the Ump and the offensive player to keep that kid from throwing a punch. Me personally, I thought it just took too long to get him off the field AND even though I was on the home team’s side, I was embarrassed by this young man’s actions (kind of like showing a true lady a Playboy magazine [flush]). I just wished I could have apologized to the ump; For what I don’t know, I had done nothing wrong.

Then, as you may know by now due to the rightly given publicity, a Dominican player explodes at a game in Dayton, OH and injures a FAN! Just read the off of this Midwest League news bit (and some more)and then take a Google search walk on some of the names involved and you will really be amazed. I imagine you can quickly find some video of the brawl. Once I read about it yesterday and then saw the brawl tape on CNN while at a McDonald’s on the way to the Mud Cats game last night, I was mad. It almost ruined my evening. There happened to be a full Little League All Star team and parents in that McDonald’s from Wilkes County, North Carolina. Everybody just couldn’t believe their eyes! It was just a bad deal to have in front of those 12 year old boys getting ready to “play ball!” I wanted to just turn the channel, but it wasn’t my “channel” to turn.

Let’s be honest here, I have seen Chicago Cubs manager Lou Pinella absolutely explode at players and umps. And he is just one example. That Aquafina commercial with Mr. Pinella is very accurate of the way he acts, but quite frankly I think about 1/3 of it is theatrics. Like he said in the commercial, “Come on and throw me out of here, I have a reputation to uphold!” Let’s face it, waiting for Lou Pinella to explode at a Cubs game is like waiting for a hellish accident at a NASCAR race. People go for that reason, alone.

How do I feel about Lou and the rest of the managers blowing the top at a MLB, MiLB, college or high school game? First off, everytime I have seen it the ump knew how far to let that manager go and secondly the manager knew when it was time to shut up and walk through the tunnel into the club house.  I have never seen a ball thrown at anybody, while not in play, and I haven’t ever seen anybody hurt a fan in the process of arguing a call.  Second, this is the job of a manager to back up his player, not the player to back up himself. I have rarely and I do mean rarely ever seen a player do much more than make a couple comments at an ump.  Last night, there was a close call on a strike out and the player walked backwards for about seven steps making comments, but it wasn’t ever overly rude or anything.

I am not trying to be a racist and if somebody tries to read that into my comments they are simply out of touch.  I really think it is a different problem than “Oh, no!  Baseball is just going down the tubes.”  I think it is the problem of where these kids are coming from.  The Kinston/Fredrick game was a Venuzuelan player and the Dayton game was a Dominican player.  I think they grew up in a place that holds different values and places a different level of respect on authority, rules and generally speaking, just plain good manners.  And when you bring them to the United States to play it is, in fact, a culture shock.  I have no idea, I am just typing here.  It is a suggestion of what the problem may or may not be.  But, I think somebody needs to get a handle on it, before you have high schoolers sticking their fingers in the umpire’s chest or worse, throwing a baseball into a dugout at an opposing player.

Who knows…I sure don’t.

Tamper Style Preference

July 25, 2008 · 2 Comments

Jason Haeger (Texas Coffee People) posted a short blog “article” on his site regarding “Tamper Style Preference.”  I responded below with a link to a Face Book discussion and I think it is well worthy of some time.

Here is my response:

EspressoCraft 3.5 Flat. http://tinyurl.com/55mfqy I asked what they sold more of, flat or convex, and he said it was a 50/50 split and it was all “preference.” So, I stuck with the flat.
I love it.
I would like a RB one day, but I wonder if I would use it? ;)

Now, this morning, I think I saw the first instance where a curve, of some type, would have been useful. I just can’t describe it :)

I wonder what HOFF uses?

Single Origin Espresso Trials: Success this morning

July 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

After getting some great advice from Shannon @ Coffee & Crema in Greenville, SC I was able to reduce the dose and tighten the grind for some good results.  The wife came back three times for more and I have just left the big 220v unit “on” for a while ’cause I know I will “be right back” to it shortly.

The crema was rather thick, which usually isn’t the case in a SO Espresso.  Instead of quick blonding, which I had problems with yesterday, I was counting 30 seconds until any serious blonding.  Over all, I was impressed with the taste, but in this case I agree with Mark @ Coffee Geek, it just isn’t complex enough.  But, I have had some fantastic SO in my short time.

Crema Coffee Roasters Ethiopian Karate

July 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Just got a phone call from Kevin at Crema Roasters and he has a fresh batch of Ethiopian Karate he has done for Shannon at Coffee and Crema.  Don’t blink or double take, the names are similar but they are only related by the roast :)

This single origin espresso is PHAT!  For crying out loud, e-mail’em or call’em and order some of this right now!  I am going to get two pounds of espresso and one pound of beans for the vacpot and/or press.

This is probably the best espresso that I have had in a long time, just explosive with berries.

People I would like to add in my WPress Widgets

July 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Well, there are those who I appreciate that have added me  to their “blog roll” (a list of blogs they enjoy reading) thus giving my poor blog a little more exposure.  There is about four or five that have done so, and I would like to recipricate their actions by doing the same here.

However, the Word Press widgets that you see on the right hand side aren’t working correctly and have me utterly frustrated, to say the least.

There are some people I would like to take out and some I would like to add.  And to surprise me, I found out through some searching that Hoff reads my blog through his RSS reader.  I don’t know why, but I appreciate it.  I have learned so much from him!

Desperate: Single Origin Espresso Trials

July 24, 2008 · 2 Comments

Well, since Intelligentsia kind of “goofed” on my order last week, I only had one single pound of Black Cat Espresso.  I ordered two pounds, so I called back Monday and they were glad to re-ship immediatly and it was on my door step yesterday.  The bad part of this was while I have one more pound of espresso, it was roasted on Monday and I will have to wait another four more days until that roast settles down.  Almost all coffee, regardless of the preparation method, needs about seven days (not all, but most).

So, what is a guy to do?

Well, in the first order I had a pound of Kenya Gaturiri Auction Lot and I am just stupid enough to run that through my Mazzer grinder.  Now, I already know that a single origin espresso like George Howell makes and a few others have different roast profiles than a SO for, example, a press pot.  But, what else is a guy going to do that doesn’t live in a town like ATL, CHI, DCA, NYC, ZLA, RDU.  I just can’t run down to Helios, Ninth Street or Octane Coffee Bar and grab a bag of espresso.

I took the Kenyan and ran that right through the Mazzer and it was just real bright.  Too bright for me.  But, it “stood up well” in a cappuccino!  LOL!  The best espresso I have ever had came from a single origin espresso roast (top three actually) so I know it can be done right.  But, I am hardly equipped for the ordeal.  But, it wasn’t a bad move in desperate times.

Black Cat Espresso without the chocolate

July 23, 2008 · 1 Comment

Mark (coffeegeek.com) is right about almost everything espresso (except that he bemoans single origin Espresso) and he is still “spot on” about Black Cat Espresso.

I pulled several shots yesterday and while it was good, almost bording fantastic, it just lacked something.  Today, I pulled 10 shots.  Some timed and some with the good ol’ fashion eyeball and I am telling you it is missing chocolate like crazy.

Quality Barista Job Opening in Goldsboro! This makes me sweat!

July 22, 2008 · 1 Comment

I was just going through the classified ads in my local paper (Goldsboro News Argus) and I found this:

BARISTA – Full-time position. 7am-3pm, 5 days a week. Must have experience. References required. Apply in person. 2704 Graves Drive. No phone calls!!!

Well, doing a little research, like Google mapping the address, and deductive reasoning tells me that is Mickey’s Pastries. Let me tell you something right now about MIckey’s: Mickey isn’t even alive anymore (I don’t think) but his grand daughter runs the business. She is a “Master Baker” (some type of top of the line cert) and this place has served Counter Culture Coffee in drip form for a few years. In the Goldsboro area, if you say pastry, people just logically expect your about to talk about Mickey’s Pastry. It is top of the line and nobody else can compare. For crying out loud, how hard would it be for her to have been offering some coffee service crap? Real easy, but she chose to deal with (IMHO) one of the best in the business – Counter Culture.

I called today, just being nosey and asked, “Hey, do you guys have some Counter Culture Coffee? The lady said “Yes, we do.” I replied, “Maam, do you have any bags of Espresso Toscano available?” She said, “Not right now, but we will shortly. CCC will be our supplier and you will be able to get espresso, cappuccino, Lattes and bags of coffee in just a little while.”

Folks, whoever gets this job will be taught by CCC staff and will practice proper preparation practices. So, if your in the area and looking a good job as a barista, with the possibility of having direct influence on the quality and such, I suggest giving these folks a call.

There is three $B within a stones throw and that isn’t bothering Mickey’s, either.

This is fantastic.

Good grief I wish I was 19 and had a head on my shoulders.

Watch some stupid yuts that says, “Well I really don’t even like the taste of coffee… (blah, freak’n blah)” wind up with that job.  That would be stupid and rediculas.  I am hoping that the advice given to them by CCC includes the “what not to hire” spill!

Oh my word, I bet she is going to get a hot La Marzocco!  OMW!  And a Robur, OMW!

So I am doing Facebook now…

July 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

What in the world does a guy do with a couple days off?  Figure Twitter, Facebook and later today I am going to refresh my CSS and start to work on a redo of WilsonHines.com and if that isn’t enough: I am going to finish a book off today, before I order Michael Weisman’s God in a Cup.

Black Cat Espresso for the morning

July 22, 2008 · 2 Comments

Intelligensia Coffee Black Cat Espresso is something I have been wanting to try for a long, long time. I have heard so much about this espresso. It quite possibly is the first specialty coffee espresso blend I ever heard about via the Coffee Geek site and Mark’s early podcasts. Much lauded among the forums like CG and Home Barista I wanted the espresso, but for some reason just never had it until yesterday.

Yesterday was bland, at best. It was five days off the roast. I know I should wait at least 7 days, but I was home off of the road to get repairs on my truck and to get some work done. I had to have some espresso. So, I tried it and it was just bland and that was being kind. It had no taste.

But today… OM! Today was much sweeter. Tomorrow is seven days and I know tomorrow will be much better. I ordered two pounds of BC, but only one was shipped. I called Intelli yesterday and they shipped me another pound and according to the UPS tracking number it is on the way :) While I was at it (may as well take advantage of the free shipping) I ordered a pound of their Fazenda do Sertão, Brazil which is now sold out, as of this morning. So, the good thing is I have free shipping on some fantastic SO coffee and the bad thing is I have to wait another 7 days to make the espresso!

Oh, what a life!
